lobby the nra speaking out today one week after violence rocked that small community in connecticut. >>> and devastating implosion, the end of the world? nope, it is not the apocalypse, it's what people are saying about the fiscal cliff. after speaker boehner's plan b falls flat, what's next? "newsroom" starts now. good morning to you. thank you so much for being with us. i'm carol costello. this hour a nation pauses to honor the victims of last week's horrifying attack at a connecticut elementary school. many americans including president obama will take part in a moment of violence at 9:30 eastern. that marks the moment one week ago that the gunman burst into sandy hook elementary school. church bells will toll across the country 26 times to remember each of the children and educators killed, and after being noticeably quiet for the past week, the national rifle association holds a news conference next hour. the gun rights groups will comments on the shooting as it faces impassioned calls for tighter gun control. poppy harlow, jason carroll are in newtown on this somber morning. p

, the cabinet shuffle. why chuck is looking like susan rice and the nra ceo speaking out again. this time, he's taking questions. first, president obama and speaker boehner are home for the holidays. bah humbug, fiscal cliff. good morning. i'm joy reed in today for melissa harris-perry. this week, every member of commerce had something in common. they lost one of their own. senator daniel inouye passed away. he was a senior member serving his home state of hawaii for half a century. members of congress stood shoulder-to-shoulder at the memorial thursday bowing their heads to honor their colleague as he lay in the capital rotunda. friday, they came together for a somber recollection of a man who represented an era long gone. president obama delivered the eulogy remembering the senator's key role in the investigation of the watergate scandal. >> as i watched those hearings watching him ask those piercing questions night after night, i learned how our democracy was supposed to work. our government of and by and for the people. we have a system of government where nobody is above the law. where w

fear to speak out -- not against the nra -- to speak out against survivalists. to speak out against people that want to buy assault weapon, to speak out against people -- i mean, great. if you really do -- if you believe that james madison wrote the bill of rights so people would have the ability to squeeze off that many rounds and have these extended magazine clips, if that's your america living it, that's your america. god bless you. good luck with that. if you really believe the federal government's coming, you're going to kick down your doors, what are you going to do? are you going to shoot that weapon up at the drone? lots of luck. it's not going to help you. but that's where they're positioning themselves. they don't speak out against the slaughter of 20 young children and doing anything about that because they're afraid they may offend sur vooifrlivivalists an rushing out going to walmart and buying assault weapons. they're not going to stand up to so many of these extreme forces. and mark halperin, it's killing them because, again, you look at the cnn poll. their branding's

people agree on this issue much more than our leaders in congress. i mean 74% of nra members and gun owners support having background checks for all gun sales. right now, only 40 -- sorry, 60% of gun sales take place with a background check. so we have huge disagreement there among gun owners, nongun owners, blue states, red states, we need to see that sort of agreement on capitol hill. the people are there, we need to follow the will of the people. >> i do think sometimes there's a tremendous chasm on how guns are viewed in places like chicago, new york and california, how they're viewed in versus how they're viewed in places like i'm from in south carolina, or in rural places like newtown, connecticut. >> i think it's true that there is some disagreement, but what i'm saying is there's also a lot of agreement and a lot of things that we can do which would save a lot of lives, because another thing that we have to do, a massacre like this, causes us all to confront the specter of gun violence that happens every day, often in shootings that don't make the national news. so we need to

is in its final week. are you ready? ho, ho, ho. >> all right. we want to go straight to the nra news conference which has just started. let's listen in. >> -- to avoid such events in the future. like most americans, we were shocked by what happened. like all americans, we've been discussing all of the various options that are available to protect our children and at this point we would like to share our thinking with you. for that purpose, i'd like to introduce wayne laperriere, our executive vice president. thank you again for being with us and at the end of this conference we will not be taking questions, but next week we will be available to any of you who are interested in talking about these or other issues of interest to you, so contact us, please, at that point. thank you very much. wayne? >> good morning. the national rifle association, 4 million mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters joined the nation in horror, outrage, grief, and ernest prayer for the families of newtown, connecticut. who have suffered such an incomprehensible loss as a result of this unspeakable crime. out

slamming the nra calling the group's leader a gun nut and politicians divided along party lines with the thought of more guns in schools. >> i do not believe that those remarks represent anywhere near a significant portion of america. >> school safety is a complex issue with no simple no single solution but i believe trained, armed security is one key component among many that can provide the first line of difference as well as the last line of defense. >> reporter: the debate over semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines has raged since the shooting at sandy hook. a gallup poll found 53% agreed increasing police presence in schools would be very effective. a third said somewhat effective, 12% said not effective and 42% said banning the sale of automatic weapons and nor an third, 36% said it would not be effective. feel free to weigh in on my page at rick levanthol over the debate of gun rights and greater restrictions continues. >> heather: rick, thank you. >> gregg: search for justice in the benghazi, libya terror attacks. a scathing report placing blame squarely for

correct and partially wrong. it looks like the nra's proposal is a lot like exactly what happened after 9/11. immediately though grabbed any federal agent they could to throw them on the planes and later on they put together a really poorly implemented program to arm pilots. and not very many volunteered for the program. i can see the reality. look. he is right in some regard. if someone shows up at a school and there is an armed principal and armed guard clearly that is not going to happen it's unseasonable for starters. it is impractical. let alone the safety implications that come out of all of this. did it work in the skies though? >> well, could argue that it is working because there hasn't been an incident but it looks like every time an american aircraft that gets hijacked there hasn't been any air marshals or both planes that have in iad's on board most of them didn't have armed marshals on them and i don't think there were any armed pilots on them either. so, the air marshall program alone is a billion-dollar program. and the armed pilots program is a lot of the pilots believe it

to slam their proposal. >> the nra, i would say that they were tone deaf, but it's beyond that. they're just deaf. i mean, they have completely ignored, don't understand, don't grasp how deeply wounded this nation was. >> national correspondent susan candiotti joins from us new york. susan, the nra is adamant in its position and here we are talking about it today. so was this their game plan to change the focus of discussioning from gun control to school safety? >> well, good question. but of course, is one exclusive of the other? if you ban these types of weapons, if you restrict the size of magazine clips, for example, does that mean that you couldn't also require an armed officer in every school in the thing is, the nra did not take any questions at all when they made their statement. they left so we're left to wonder. but we did try to sample opinions of what people are thinking. and we talked to, for example, a gun owner in newtown, connecticut, to see what she thought about this. >> i'm very torn at this point. i'm not happy with the nra. i am not happy with the nra and i'm a g

representative ron paul of texas distanced himself on monday from the nra proposal to put more armed guards in our nation's schools and paul said on his website it's another kind of violence. how do you think this conversation can be had logically in the new year if that's the only option that the nra wants to put on the table as a meaningful solution? >> well, i think that tragedy we just heard about in new york is further evidence of the fact that criminals and mad men do pay attention to the gun laws. that man was not supposed to have access to guns yet he did. in response to your conversation you had with my friend jack kingston, we should not be complacent to go to schools to be assassinated ed but the fac we need to protect our children and guns in schools should be decided at the local level but the mad men and criminals, no amount of gun control and restricting access and tightening the gun laws will stop a criminal from doing what he intends to do but putting an armed guard in the school, local schools feel that's the thing to do, we need to protect our children and one way to do

? at what point can citizens say it's taking too long or the nra is slow walking this stuff again? it seems to me every time we say it's going to be different also, that's another similarity. >> we had that same conversation after columbine, which i covered. we had that same conversation after aurora and all the other ones in between. same conversation. >> remember that the first gun assault law, assault weapons law took five years to pass. it was first proposed in 1989 after the stockton shooting and senators metzenbound and feinstein worked on it five years. i'm determined, i'm committed. but the president is absolutely right, that the american people have to stand up. i'll tell you what also is different. i've talked to a lot of these families and i am so impressed by their strength and courage and they say to me we want to be there. we want this work to go forward. >> cnn reported last night that there are tens of thousands of criminals who have lied on their background checks. that the fbi has identified and turned over to the department of justice and they simply haven't been prosecut

. and also, west virginia senator joe manchin also a democrat, also a longtime member of the nra, said that he has changed his position after the massacre and now supports gun control legislation. lawmakers are hearing today from more than 20 family members and victims of mass shootings across this country. those people all came together on capitol hill and decided they needed to meet with leaders in congress and leaders in the white house. they are demanding that they seriously address gun violence in america. each person who came had a very emotional story to share and they included a father whose 24-year-old son was killed in arepo aurora, colorado, who shielded his girlfriend who the shooter took so many. a mother gunned down on a chicago bus. a father lost his 15-year-old son during columbine tragedy. and the list went on and on. and the photos kept coming out. their message, about 32 people are killed every single day by guns in this country and that it has got to stop. >> today, there will be 32 more families that know the pain and or that you just heard here today. so we pay a

support arming school officials and 54 percent of the americans have favorable opinion of the nra. i love the story that you did on the 5 that kimberley did about the military guys. i don't know what branch he was in. he was standing outside of the school can making sure it was protected. >> kelly: again it shows that americans support the second amendment and right to bear arms because everyone . s to feel they are product exclude if they want to go out hunting they can do that. >> that is a great point, kelley. coming up a company that never fired anyone before is about to. >> i am trying to let people know it is not only hurting our industry but america. >> it is a new meaning to heavy metal. this boy plays drums on the mom's washing machine.
